Apple may Report Its First Decline in Quarterly Revenue in Nearly 4 Years, Say Analysts
Apple is expected to report its first decline in quarterly revenue in nearly four years after strict COVID-19 curbs in China rapped the economy and related protests upended iPhone production at its biggest supplier Foxconn.
Investors will look for details on how Chief Executive Tim Cook is trying to bolster demand in a weak economy that has prompted mass layoffs in the tech industry, a move Apple has so far avoided thanks to frugal hiring during the pandemic.
"With supply chain challenges largely normalized, we now believe Apple is entering a period of slower demand due to macro factors," said Cowen analyst Krish Sankar, adding that he expects 2 percent fewer iPhone units to be sold in 2023.
The world's biggest public company is expected to report on Thursday that iPhone sales fell about 5 percent for the all-important holiday quarter, according to Refinitiv. The last time iPhone sales slipped was in the August-October period in 2020, months into the COVID-19 pandemic.
UBS analysts expect iPhone sales to have held up better in the United States than China and Europe, as the economies reeled from the impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Some demand for the iPhone will likely be pushed into the current quarter after supply restrictions in the first quarter and some demand lost due to lack of product availability in the holiday period, BofA analyst Wamsi Mohan said.
The services business, a key growth engine for the company and home to Apple's music and video streaming services, is set to post its lowest revenue growth for the holiday quarter — another fallout of consumers limiting spending.
THE CONTEXT
The disruption at the world's biggest iPhone plant in Zhengzhou, China triggered a rare warning from Apple in November and limited stocks of its higher-end iPhone 14 models during what is typically its biggest sales quarter, powered by product launches and the holidays.
Greater China, including Hong Kong, is key to Apple's fortunes, contributing roughly a fifth to annual revenue. The Cupertino, California-based tech behemoth had in 2019 pared its total sales forecast due to an economic slowdown in the country following the Sino-US trade war.
Analysts, however, expect a much-faster recovery this time as factories have restarted in China and Apple diversifies its production footprint with plants in India.
"Commentary from luxury goods companies indicates China is rebounding quickly, which implies Mar-quarter Chinese iPhone sales should be better than expected," Evercore ISI analysts said in a note.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra First Impressions: Big Upgrades in a Familiar Package
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Review) turned out to be a solid formula for success when it was announced last year. This smartphone also marked the end of Samsung's Galaxy Note series as it successfully integrated the S Pen stylus experience, which was the last piece of the puzzle.
The newly launched Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is no different. It offers a familiar design that looks very similar to its predecessor, but packs many improvements, upgrades and new features compared to the previous model. It also has enough unique features to separate itself from the regular Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23+ models. Let's take a closer look at what makes this the most interesting smartphone in Samsung's S series lineup this year.
A quick glance at the Galaxy S23 Ultra and it gets really hard to spot the difference between it and the older model. Upon closer inspection, there are minor differences. Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra now has flattened sides around the metal frame, instead of being curved. The front glass and matte-finished rear panel are made from Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2, but retain the curved edges.
According to Samsung, the flatter sides along with the reduced curvature of the edges not only makes the phone easier to grip, but should also result in a broader, usable flat area (when held vertically). The rear panel has a similar feel and appearance as the previous model, but with a slightly refreshed camera design. You get the same floating camera layout, but with chrome rings around each of the lenses. The phone, just like the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ models, offers an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. It will be available in Phantom Black, Cream, Green and Lavender finishes.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra rear panel is made from Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's design also focusses on sustainability this year, with more recycled materials used such as recycled glass for the front screen and back cover, recycled aluminium for the SIM tray, side keys and volume keys, and recycled plastic for the speaker modules (upper and lower) and the S Pen's inner cover.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 6.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display which offers a dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz and a touch sampling rate of up to 240Hz, when Game Mode is enabled. Unlike the previous model, the display on the new one does not bend or curve aggressively over the left and right sides. The mild curved-edge is present mainly to allow the One UI edge functionality, along with a more seamless swiping experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra alongside the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23+
Samsung has gone with its own customised version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC in the Galaxy S23 series and is calling it the “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform for Galaxy”. According to Samsung, the customisations enable better performance, which should help with better software performance and AI-based imaging. The Galaxy S23 Ultra will be available with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage.
The main camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra now includes a newly introduced 200-megapixel sensor called the ISOCELL HP2. This combines 16 pixels into one larger pixel which is said to produce brighter shots in low light. Samsung claims that this adaptive pixel sensor along with the advantages of its customised SoC can help deliver brighter images in low light. The sensor is also claimed to have better optical stabilisation (OIS), which should result in sharper and smoother night videos.
Samsung says there's also enhanced noise reduction technology to help reduce noise in videos recorded in low light, and a new 'Astro Hyperlapse' mode for capturing star trails as well. The other rear cameras are a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle, 10-megapixel telephoto (with 3X optical zoom), and a second 10-megapixel telephoto (with 10X optical zoom). There's a 12-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies, that can now capture RAW photos and record HDR10+ video. The Galaxy S23 Ultra can also capture up to 8K video at 30fps using the main rear camera but with a wider angle than before.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has four rear cameras
Samsung plays it safe with battery capacity and charging speeds with this year's ‘Ultra', sticking to a 5,000mAh battery and 45W wired charging. As for software, there's Samsung's One UI 5.1 skin which is based on Android 13 and comes with all the note-taking customisations that were available on the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
This year, more than ever, Samsung seems to have packed enough hardware in the Galaxy S23 Ultra in order to distance it from the Galaxy S23+, and even last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra. With only a few premium flagships announced so far in India bearing the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Samsung has secured a solid lead with its early launch. Whether its custom SoC actually translates into better gaming performance compared to say, the iQoo 11 5G (Review), or if its new camera system is really able to offer better low-light performance compared to the previous model and other heavy-hitters such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro (Review), are something that we need to wait and see. We'll have all the answers for you in our full review of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, right here on Gadgets 360.

Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ First Impressions: More of the Same
Samsung's Galaxy S series of devices have been an easy recommendation over the years for anyone looking for a no holds barred, premium Android smartphone experience. While the Ultra model now comes with an S Pen stylus (replacing the Galaxy Note) and the best possible camera hardware in the series, it is also priced a lot higher from the standard models, making the regular S series the go-to for someone looking to get a flagship Samsung smartphone.
With the new Samsung Galaxy S23 and the Samsung Galaxy S23+, the upgrades appear quite minor compared to their respective predecessors. The differences are battery related, tweaks to the design, and a newer processor. Let's take a closer look at what's new.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ appear almost identical to their older counterparts when viewed from the front. It's only from the back, where buyers will notice a few changes. The shiny Armour Aluminium frame is as flat as the one on their predecessors, but the iconic contour-cut camera housing has changed.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 (top) and Galaxy S23+ (bottom) have rear panels made from Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2
Samsung has replaced that with a newer floating camera design which has individual cutouts for each camera. While it feels more in line with last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra, the rings around each camera lens have now received a shiny chrome finish, making them stand out. Samsung has also upgraded the quality of glass.
Both, the front and rear glass on the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ are made from Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which according to the brand should be more resistant to shattering when dropped compared to previous models. The phones offer an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and will be available in Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender finishes.
The 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED displays on the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ respectively, offer a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and up to a 240Hz touch sampling rate (in Game Mode). The displays on both phones appear very similar to last year's models and come with no noticeable upgrades.

Both, the Samsung Galaxy S23 (right) and Galaxy S23+ (left) feature flat Super AMOLED displays
Thankfully, the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ get the same custom SoC like on the more expensive Galaxy S23 Ultra model. Samsung calls it the “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform for Galaxy” and it promises to offer a number of performance-related (CPU, GPU and NPU) enhancements over the standard version. The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ will come with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.
The rear camera setup is quite similar to what's available on the previous model, with a 50-megapixel primary camera (with OIS), 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom (with OIS), and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. Selfies are handled by a 12-megapixel front-facing camera which can now also record videos in HDR10+ and shoot RAW photos.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 (left) and Galaxy S23+ (middle) alongside the Galaxy S23 Ultra (right)
The Samsung Galaxy S23's battery capacity has grown from the previous 3,700mAh to 3,900mAh, but the charging speed is still limited to 25W for wired and 10W for wireless charging. The Samsung Galaxy S23+ also gets a bigger 4,700mAh battery (from the previous 4,500mAh) but it can now charge at 45W when plugged in. Wireless charging is still limited to 10W. Both smartphones are powered by One UI 5.1 which is based on Android 13.
Just like last year, Samsung has reserved the best hardware for its ‘Ultra' model and because of that, there's little that has changed with the new Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23+ models this year when it comes to features. Minor cosmetic changes aside, Samsung seems to be banking on the customised Qualcomm SoC to set its phones apart. Stay tuned for our detailed review to find out if these should be your next flagship.
